Week of December 16-20, 2019


Weekly Newsletter for December 16-20, 2019

            We will take our test on our story, “A Big Fish for Max,” tomorrow, December 17th.  The high frequency words for this story are:  said, want, good, catch, no, and put.  

Our focus phonics skills are digraphs –sh and –th and the vowel sound in ball, a, al.  Our spelling words are: fish, then, shut, with, rush, shell, shop, trash, thin and ship.  Our challenge words are “want” and “good.”   The spelling test on these words will also be tomorrow, December 17th! 

In Math, we will review word problems and creating our number sentences!  Our test on Unit 3 will be on Wednesday, December 18th. 

            We will celebrate our December PBIS reward on Friday, December 20th.  Students are permitted to wear school appropriate pajamas to school!  With your permission, students are also permitted to bring in an electronic.  All electronics will be kept in their cubby until it is time for the reward.  Please be sure all games are school appropriate and have a charged battery! J

Week of December 9-13, 2019


Weekly Newsletter for December 9-13, 2019

          In Reading, we will continue to discuss what families do together!  We will also continue to work on putting a story’s details in the correct order.  The high frequency words for this story are:  said, want, good, catch, no, and put.   Our test on this story will be early next week! 

Our focus phonics skills are digraphs –sh and –th and the vowel sound in ball, a, al.  Our spelling words are: fish, then, shut, with, rush, shell, shop, trash, thin and ship.  Our challenge words are “want” and “good.”  

In Math, we will work on identifying the part unknown in our word problems.  We will also begin to discuss subtraction, and review using a number to help us solve! 

Our schedule for the upcoming week:

Tuesday (12/10)- Day 6- Library *Our day to shop the PTO Holiday Workshop!  Please send all money in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and who they are buying for! Thank you! J

Week of December 2-6, 2019


Weekly Newsletter for December 2-6, 2019

          This week, we will begin our new story, “A Big Fish for Max!”  Throughout this story, we will discuss things that families do together.  Our reading strategy will be sequencing.  The high frequency words for this story are:  said, want, good, catch, no, and put. 

          Our focus phonics skills are digraphs –sh and –th and the vowel sound in ball, a, al.  Our spelling words are: fish, then, shut, with, rush, shell, shop, trash, thin and ship.  Our challenge words are “want” and “good.” 

          In Math, we will continue to work on solving doubles facts.  We will also begin adding three digits together to find the sum! 

December Scholastic Book order forms were sent home last week!  You may order online using our class code: MJJ8J or you may send in your book order with a check (Scholastic INC.).  All Scholastic Book orders are due by Monday, December 9th.   

December Reading Logs will be sent home in your child’s B.E.E. Folder today!  The decodable readers and phonics stories are great practice for your child!  Not only does it reinforce the phonics skill we are working on, but it builds their reading fluency!  If your child reads the story two times, please write it on your reading log! J

Weekly Newsletter for November 25- 29, 2019

          Today, we will take our test for our story, “Animal Park.”  We will begin Unit 2 after returning back from Thanksgiving break!  In this Unit, we will discuss our community! 

          We will also continue to work on word problems this week in Math!  Please continue to practice the flash cards in your child’s B.E.E. Folder! J 

          November Reading Logs will be collected after the Thanksgiving Break.  Students that complete a Reading Log will receive a special prize! 

 Attached to our newsletter are our December Scholastic Book order forms!  You may order online using our class code: MJJ8J or you may send in your book order with a check (Scholastic INC.).  All Scholastic Book orders are due by Monday, December 9th.

            We will continue with our story, “Animal Park.”  Our reading skill for this story is cause and effect!  Our high frequency words are: home, many, them and into.  Our test on this story will be Monday, November 25th. 

            Our focus phonics skills for this story are short u and final consonant blends.  Our spelling words are crust, bump, jump, must, just, dust, trust, dusk, hunt, and lump.  Our challenge words are “many” and “into.”  Our test on these words will also be Monday, November 25th!

            In Math, we will continue to work on word problems!  We will also work on doubles and doubles plus one.

With cold and flu season among us, we are in need of tissues and hand sanitizer to keep those germs away!  If you are willing to donate these items to our classroom, we would really appreciate it! J

Weekly Newsletter for November 11-15, 2019

          In Reading, we will begin our next story, “Animal Park.”  Throughout this story, we will discuss what we can learn from watching wild animals.  Our high frequency words are: home, many, them and into. 

            Our focus phonics skills for this story are short u and final consonant blends.  Our spelling words are crust, bump, jump, must, just, dust, trust, dusk, hunt, and lump.  Our challenge words are “many” and “into.” 

            In Math, we will begin Unit 3.  Throughout this unit, we will dive deeper into understanding addition and subtraction.  This week, we will focus on creating fact families, and solving word problems! In your child’s B.E.E folder, you will see a “Math Facts” envelope.  Please review these flash cards with your child periodically to continue to build fluency of math facts!  Please keep these in the B.E.E. folder, as we will be adding more flash cards throughout the year and using these in our centers!  Thank you! J

Last week, I sent home our November Scholastic Book order forms.  You may order online using our class code: MJJ8J or you may send in your book order with a check (Scholastic INC.).  All Scholastic Book orders are due by Wednesday, November 13th!

Weekly Newsletter for November 4- 8, 2019

            We will continue with our story, “Get the Egg!”  We have been talking about wild animals that we see and live in our neighborhoods!  We will continue to work on identifying the main idea and supporting details of a story.  Our high frequency words for this story are: saw, tree, your and small.  Our Reading test will be Friday, November 8th. 

Our focus phonics skills for this story are short e and initial consonant blends.  The spelling words for this story are: men, red, step, ten, net, leg, jet, sled, wet and bed.  Our challenge words are “saw” and “your.”  Our Spelling test will also be on Friday, November 8th. 

We will take our Unit 2 Math test tomorrow, November 5th!  Next, we will dig deeper into Addition and Subtraction in Unit 3! 

*A friendly reminder: As of November 3rd (Daylight Savings) shorts are no longer allowed to be worn!  As the weather continues to cool off, please be sure to dress accordingly.  We will be going outside for recess as much as possible! J

Weekly Newsletter for October 28- November 1, 2019

            We will begin our new story, “Get the Egg!”  Throughout this story we will discuss which wild animals live in our neighborhoods.  We will continue to work on identifying the main idea of a story with supporting details.  Our high frequency words for this story are: saw, tree, your and small. 

            Our focus phonics skills for this story are short e and initial consonant blends.  The spelling words for this story are: men, red, step, ten, net, leg, jet, sled, wet and bed.  Our challenge words are “saw” and “your.” 

            In Math this week, we will work on identifying the part we know and the missing addend!  We will also discuss comparing two groups of objects and creating a number sentence!  Our test for Unit 2 will be early next week! 

            This Thursday, October 31st, we will be having our annual Halloween parade and treat in our classroom.  An important paper was sent home in our Friday Folders outlining the guidelines.  Please send your child’s costume in a bag labeled with their name on Thursday, October 31st! 

            Thursday is also the end of the month of October.  I will be collecting reading logs on that day!  Please be sure to list all books that the students read for that month!  Students who completed 10 entries will receive a prize!  Thank you for continued support!

            In our story, “A Fox and a Kit,” we will continue to discuss how wild animals take care of their babies!  Our reading skill is identifying the main idea and key details from a story!  The high frequency words for this story are eat, her, five, this, four and too.  Our test for this story will be on Friday, October 25th.
 
            Our focus phonics skills are inflected endings –s and –ing.  The spelling words for this story are: sit, sits, win, wins, fit, fits, hit, hits, nap, and naps.  Our challenge words are “her” and “too.”  Our spelling test for this phonics skill will be on Friday, October 25th. 

            In Math, we will continue to work on solving number sentences with the use of a number line!  We will also continue to discuss the Communitive Property and ways to make 10. 

            This week is Red Ribbon week!  Please follow the theme day guidelines each day if you are participating! J

Monday- We are “RED-DY” to say no to drugs! Wear red!
Tuesday- Being drug free is “jean-ious!”  Wear a Spartan shirt with jeans!
Wednesday- Staying away from drugs is no sweat!  Wear a Spartan shirt with sweatpants
Thursday- We are too bright for drugs! Wear bright clothing to school!
Friday- Team up against drugs!  Wear a pink shirt to show we are united in various causes!

Our next story in Reading will be “A Fox and a Kit.”  We will be discussing how wild animals take care of their babies.  Throughout our story we will work on identifying the main idea and key details. 

          Our focus phonics skills are inflected endings –s and –ing.  The spelling words for this story are: sit, sits, win, wins, fit, fits, hit, hits, nap, and naps.  Our challenge words are “her” and “too.”

          In Math, we will continue to work on addition sentences to 10.  We will work on finding the missing addend, and review using a number line.  Key words we will focus on this week are: addend, plus, equal sign, and sum.

          Please continue to encourage your child to practice reading at home!  Document your child’s reading on their Reading Log that can be found in their BEE folder!  Students who complete the October Reading Log will receive a Pizza Hut book-it coupon.
