Week of January 27-31, 2020


Weekly Newsletter for January 27-31, 2020

            Our new story in Reading is, “Who Works Here?”  In this story, we will learn about who makes our community a great place!  We will also discuss the Authors Purpose of a story!  Our high frequency words for this story are: people, live, work, who, and out.  

          Our focus phonics skills for this story are the long I sound and digraphs wh, ch, tch, and ph.  Our spelling words are like, ride, smile, time, white, bike, dime, hide, ice and kite.  The challenge words are: “who” and “work.” 

          In Math, we will begin to show different ways to represent a number!  Listen for key vocabulary words such as “word form, base ten, expanded form and digits.  We will also continue to compare numbers! 

          A friendly reminder that January Reading Logs will be collected on Friday, January 31st!  Please be sure to record any books that you are reading with your child at home on this log! J

Week of January 20-24, 2020


Weekly Newsletter for January 20- 24, 2020

            This week we will continue to work on the phonics skill Long A and consonants c /s/ and g /j/.  We will also continue to discuss cause and effect this week as a class through read aloud stories!   

          In Math, we will work on comparing two numbers.  Listen for key words such as “greater than, less than, or equal to.”  We will begin working on solving word problems using base ten blocks! 

          January Reading Logs will be collected next Friday (1/31).  Please continue to read with your child at home! J  By practicing reading, students are building both their fluency and comprehension skills!  The decodable readers are a great practice to build these skills as well as practice our focus phonics skills!  Thank you for your continued support! J

Week of January 13-17, 2020


Weekly Newsletter for January 13- 17, 2020

            We will continue with our story, “The Farmer in the Hat” this week!  We have talked about how our school and classroom is a community.  We are also discussing cause and effect!  Our high frequency words are: cold, be, old, paper, of, and horse.  The test for this story will be Friday, January 17th. 

Our focus phonics skills are the long a sound and consonants c/s/ and g /j/.  Our spelling words are face, made, age, safe, make, take, cage, cake, late, and name.  Our challenge words are “could” and “old.”  Our test on these words will be on Friday, January 17th. 

In Math, we will continue to explore place value.  We will be working on building tens and comparing two numbers!  Key vocabulary words this week are: tens, ones, greater than, less than, equal to! 

January Scholastic Book order forms were sent home!  You may order online using our class code: MJJ8J or you may send in your book order with a check (Scholastic INC.).  All Scholastic Book orders are due Wednesday, January 15th.  Thank you for your continued support! J

Week of January 6-10, 2020


Weekly Newsletter for January 6-10, 2020

          Welcome back and Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing break!  J 

            We will begin a new story this week titled, “The Farmer in the Hat.”  Throughout this story we will discuss how our school is a community.  We will also revisit the skill of cause and effect.  Our high frequency words are: could, be, old, paper, of, and horse. 

            Our focus phonics skills are the long a sound and consonants c/s/ and g /j/.  Our spelling words are face, made, age, safe, make, take, cage, cake, late, and name.  Our challenge words are “could” and “old.” 

            In Math, we will begin Unit 4!  In this unit, we will focus on Place Value!  To begin, we will work on finding groups of ten to skip count and showing extra ones!  Please continue to work on our Math flash cards!  We are working so hard to beat our team score in Spring Math! J

            Attached you will find our January Scholastic Book order forms!  You may order online using our class code: MJJ8J or you may send in your book order with a check (Scholastic INC.).  All Scholastic Book orders are due Wednesday, January 15th.
