Week of March 26- 30, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for March 26-30, 2018

            In our story, “Ruby in Her Own Time,” we are discussing what we learn as we grow and change.  We have also discussed comparing and contrasting.  Our test for this story will be Thursday, March 29th. 

            Our focus phonics skills for this story are words with –ng and –nk and compound words.  Our spelling words are: bring, trunk, pink, bank, sang, wing, rink, blank, rang, and sunk.  Our challenge words include: “every” and “sure.”  Our spelling test will also be on Thursday, March 29th. 

            In Topic 12, we are discussing length!  We are discussing how objects can be measured, compared and ordered by length.  Key vocabulary for this topic includes: longest, shortest, taller, shorter, estimate, and measure. 

            March AR Reading logs will be collected on Thursday, March 29th.  A new April AR paper will be sent home as well!  Students have really enjoyed reading books from our classroom library and putting them on their AR paper!

*Last day for donations for our PTO basket! 
Thursday (3/29)- This is a Non-Rotation Day due to the PBIS reward!

Tuesday, April 3rd- Spring pictures were rescheduled for this day! 
April 14th (10am- 5pm) &  April 15th (10am- 3pm) - North Schuylkill Elementary PTO raffle basket fundraiser in the Elementary School Gym!

Week of March 19- 23, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for March 19-23, 2018

            In our new story, “Ruby in Her Own Time,” we will be discussing what we learn as we grow and change.  As a class, we will also be re-visiting the skill of compare and contrast. 

            Our focus phonics skills for this story are words with –ng and –nk and compound words.  Our spelling words are: bring, trunk, pink, bank, sang, wing, rink, blank, rang, and sunk.  Our challenge words include: “every” and “sure.”

            In Math, we took our Topic 9 test today!  Next, we will be diving into “length” in Topic 12.  Throughout this topic, we will be discussing how objects can be measured, compared and ordered by length. 

            Our PTO basket raffle is quickly approaching!  The dates of this event are April 14th and April 15th.  This year, our theme is a gift card assortment!  If you are interested in participating in our class basket, all gift cards and money must be turned in by Wednesday, March 28th.  Thank you to all that have participated so far! J

            Last week, I sent home a Scholastic Flyer for the Spring edition!  If you are interested in ordering from Scholastic, all orders are due by Thursday, March 22nd.   You may order online using our class code: MJJ8J or by sending in cash or check (Scholastic Inc.) along with your order slip!  Thank you for your continued support! J 

            With cold and flu season, our supply of tissues and hand sanitizer has dwindled as we tried to keep those germs away.   If you are willing to donate these items to our classroom, we would really appreciate it!   Thank you!

Week of March 12- 16, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for March 12- 16, 2018

            We are continuing to discuss how places change in our story, “A Place to Play.”  We are also identifying sequencing words and talking about the sequence of a story.  Our test for “A Place to Play” will be Friday, March 16th. 

Our focus phonics skills for this story are vowel sounds of y and syllable pattern cv.  Our spelling words are: my, by, try, sunny, handy, fly, cry, lucky, silly and puppy. Our challenge words for this story include: “things” and “always.”  Our test for these focus skills will be on Friday, March 16th. 

In Math, we are really focusing on comparing and ordering numbers to 100.  We have really focused on identifying one more, one less, ten more, and ten less!  We are going to begin comparing numbers to identify which is greater than, less than or equal to.  Our test for Topic 9 will be early next week! 

On Friday, I sent home a paper outlining our PTO’s basket raffle.  The event will be held on April 14th and April 15th.  Each classroom has selected a theme to donate towards the basket raffle.  This year, our theme will be a gift card assortment.

There are two ways you can participate in our class basket:

1.     1. You may purchase a gift card on your own and send it to school with your child in their OWL folder. 
      2. You may send in a monetary donation in an envelope in your child’s OWL folder and I will purchase the gift card for you! 

*Please note, any size gift card/ money donation would be greatly appreciated!  
*If you are interested in participating in the PTO basket raffle, all gift cards and money must be turned in by Wednesday, March 28th.

Week of March 5-9, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for March 5- 9, 2018

            We will begin a new Unit in Reading focusing on changes.  For our first story, “A Place to Play,” we will be discussing how places change.  We will also be re-visiting the skill of sequencing throughout this story.

            In Math, we will continue to compare and order numbers to 100.  Key vocabulary we will be using include: more, less, greater than, and less than.   

            March 5- March 9th is Newspaper in Education week!  Read at Home Challenge papers were sent home today in your child’s Friday Folder.  If you are interested in participating, please return the paper by Monday, March 12th.  Your child’s name will be published in the Republican & Herald at a later date. To go along with Newspaper in Education week, I have submitted an “ad” to the Republican & Herald.  This ad will be placed in the classified section of the newspaper sometime this week!  J

            I am happy to report that our class has won another BINGO on our 100s chart for TEAMWORK!  As a reward for working together, we will be creating/ designing a puzzle!  J  Keep up the amazing job, first grade!
