Week of September 30-October 4, 2019


Weekly Newsletter for September 30- October 4, 2019

            In Reading, we will begin our new story, “The Big Blue Ox.”  We will discuss how animals can help us!  We will also revisit the skill of identifying the characters and setting within a story!  The high frequency words are: blue, help, little, from, use, and get. 
            Our focus phonics skills for this story are short O and plural –s.  The spelling words are: hot, hop, pot, pop, ox, lock, mop, got, and rock.  Our challenge words are “help” and “use”. 

            Our test in Math for organizing and representing data will be on Wednesday, October 2nd! We will then begin Unit 2!  Throughout this unit, we will focus on addition and subtraction concepts!  Key vocabulary words for this unit are: join, separate, sum, difference and equal!

Important Upcoming Dates:

Monday (10/7)-This will be our day to shop the Scholastic Book Fair!
            **It is also Family Night to shop from 4pm-7pm. 
Thursday (10/10)- Picture Re-Take Day!
Friday (10/11)- Act 80 Half Day—Students will be dismissed at 12 noon

Week of September 23-27, 2019


Weekly Newsletter for September 23-27, 2019

          In Reading, we will continue with our story, “Pig in a Wig.”  We have discussed who helps animals and what we could do to help animals!  Our class has also discussed the plot of the story!  The high frequency words for this story are: she, take, what and up.  Our test for this story will be tomorrow, Tuesday, September  24th.

Our focus phonics skills for this story are short I and consonant -x.  Our spelling words are: six, lip, in, wig, it, did, mix, sit, pin, and fix.  Our challenge words are “she” and “take.”  Our spelling test will also be tomorrow, Tuesday, September 24th. 

In Math, we will continue to discuss number lines!  We will also begin to talk about different ways to represent a number.  For example: using tally marks, ten frames, base-ten blocks, word form, drawing a picture, and a number sentence!

As a class, we love to read and listen to stories!  It is very important that kids hear fluent reading and apply comprehension strategies.  One way we can practice these skills is by having guest readers come into our classroom!  If any parent/ grandparent/ guardian would like to come into our classroom as a guest reader, please let me know by writing me a note, email or Class Dojo message!

Weekly Newsletter for September 16- 20, 2019

          In Reading, we will begin our new story, “Pig in a Wig.”  Throughout this story, we will discuss who helps animals!  We will also talk about the plot of a story.  Our high frequency words for this story are: she, take, what and up. 

          Our focus phonics skills for this story are short I and consonant -x.  Our spelling words are: six, lip, in, wig, it, did, mix, sit, pin, and fix. 

          In Math, we will continue to discuss ways to organize and represent information about our new class!  We will also begin Spring Math in our classroom!  Students will be working on math skills to promote mastery of math facts!  You may hear your child talking about working in partners and being a “teacher” and “worker.” 

Last week, Scholastic Book Orders were sent home with our newsletter!  You may order online using our class code: MJJ8J or you may send in your book order with a check (Scholastic INC.).  All Scholastic Book orders are due on Tuesday, September 17th!

In Reading, we are continuing to discuss what pets need in our first story, “Sam, Come Back!”  We are also working on identifying the characters and setting of our story!  Our key sight words are: my, come, way, on, in.  Our test for this story will be on Wednesday, September 11th. 

 Our spelling words for this story are: at, can, cat, back, dad, am, bat, mad, ran, sack.  Our challenge words are: “way” and “come.”  The phonics focus skills are the short a sound and consonant pattern –ck.  Our test for this set of spelling words will be on Wednesday, September 11th. 

 In Math, we are beginning Unit 1!  Throughout this unit, we will discuss ways we can organize and represent information about our new class!
