Week of December 18- December 22, 2017

Weekly Newsletter for December 18-22, 2017
We are completing our first story of Unit 2, “A Big Fish for Max.”  In this story, we have been discussing activities we can do together as a family!  Our test for this story will
be tomorrow, December 19th. 

Our phonics skills for this story are consonant digraphs sh and th and vowel sound “al.”  Our spelling words are: fish, then, shut, with, rush, shell, shop, trash, thin, and ship.  Our challenge words are: “want” and “good.”   Our spelling test on these words will be tomorrow, December 19th

Thursday, December 21st, is our December PBIS reward day!  At the beginning of the month, students selected a reward they would like to work towards for this month.  If your child selected “Pajamas and Movie” they are permitted to wear pajamas to school that day!  They may also bring a blanket or beach towel on Thursday to sit on during the movie! 

I am so excited to share that our students earned another BINGO on our TEAMWORK 100’s chart!  We will be making winter stain glass windows together for this reward! J

Just a friendly reminder, moving forward students are permitted to wear jeans or sweat pants with a Spartan shirt for dress down days.  Causal clothing is not allowed for dress down days.

Week of December 11-15, 2017

Weekly Newsletter for December 11-15, 2017

          We have started a new unit in Reading!  In this unit we will be focusing on communities!  For our first story, “A Big Fish for Max” we will be discussing different things that families can do together.  Our class will also be practicing sequencing events!  Key words for sequencing are: first, then, next, and finally. 

          Our phonics skills for this story are consonant digraphs sh and th and vowel sound “al.”  Our spelling words are: fish, then, shut, with, rush, shell, shop, trash, thin, and ship.  Our challenge words are: “want” and “good.”   

          In Math, we are continuing to discuss strategies that can be used to find addition facts!    Recently, we have been identifying doubles, doubles +1, doubles +2, or completing the ten frame with our addends!  Our test for Topic 5 will be Wednesday, December 13th

          On Friday, report cards were sent home!  Along with the report card you received a copy of your child’s results for the OLSAT that was given by our guidance counselor, Mrs. Hull.  Attached to our newsletter is a note from Mrs. Hull explaining the OLSAT.   

          Please continue to read with your child and log their reading on the December AR reading log!  December AR reading logs will be collected on Thursday, December 21st.

Week of December 4- 8, 2017

Weekly Newsletter for December 4- December 8, 2017

We are finishing our story, “Animal Park” where we have been discussing what we can learn from observing animals in the wild!  As a class, we have also been identifying the cause and effect in a story!  Our test for this story will be Tuesday, December 5th!

Our phonics skills for this story are the short u sound and final consonant blends.  Our spelling words are: crust, bump, jump, must, just, dust, trust, dusk, hunt, and lump.  Our challenge words are: “many” and “into.” The test for our spelling words will be Tuesday, December 5th
 
In Math, we have been discussing strategies we can use to find addition facts!  Currently, students have been working on doubles, doubles +1, and doubles +2.  To find the doubles plus facts, we are circling the smaller number, finding that doubles fact and then adding.  For example: 5 + 6 = ?, we will complete 5+5+10, 10+1=11, so 5+6=11.

We started a new topic in Math!  Topic 5 will cover addition facts to 20.  Please continue to review the math fact flash cards with your child.  These flash cards should be kept in their OWL folder.  We will be adding new flash cards this week! J

November AR papers will be collected on Thursday, November 30th.  Students that completed the AR paper will receive a Pizza Hut book-it coupon for a personal sized pizza.  December AR papers will be sent home on Friday, December 1st

We will be taking our Topic 4 test today!  Tomorrow we will begin Topic 5: Addition Facts to 20.  Please continue to practice the math fact flash cards that can be found in your child’s OWL folder!  We will continue to add cards to the envelope periodically so please be sure to return the envelope daily! 

With our month of November winding down, please continue to read with your child and document their reading on their AR paper!  Those that complete their November AR paper will receive a Pizza Hunt coupon for a free personal size pizza.  Remember if your child is reading a chapter book, you can break that chapter book into multiple spaces!  Another great resource for the AR reading log are the decodable readers!  These readers reinforce the phonics skills we are focusing on in class!  November AR reading logs will be collected Thursday, November 30th. 

Our November PBIS reward will be on Wednesday, November 22nd!  Part of our reward that day is game day!  Students are allowed to bring in an electronic device this day with your permission!  Please be sure that devices are charged and that all games are school appropriate

Week of November 13-17, 2017

Weekly Newsletter for November 13-17, 2017
Our focus question for our story, Get the Egg, is “what wild animals live in our neighborhood?”  Students have really enjoyed talking about animals that they see in the wild!  We are also discussing the main idea of a passage and supporting details.  Our test for this story will be Friday, November 17th

Our focus phonics skills for this story are short e and consonant blends.  Our spelling words for this story are: men, red, step, ten, net, leg, jet, sled, wet, bed.  The challenge words are: “saw” and “your.”  Please continue to work on these words nightly with your child!  The test for these spelling words will be Friday, November 17th

In Math, we are continuing to discuss strategies that we can use to find addition and subtraction facts!  We have learned that addition and subtraction facts can be written two ways, “up and down OR side to side!”  In the coming weeks, I will be sending home an envelope with your child that will contain addition and subtraction flash cards.  Please practice these flash cards with your child!  It is important that these facts become automatic!  Our Topic 4 test will be Monday, November 20th!

I am going to begin to send home Scholastic Book Order forms each month!  If you are interested in ordering, please either send in a check (made payable to Scholastic Inc.) with the book order slip, or you may order online using our class code: MJJ8J.  Our orders for November are due by Friday, November 17th

I am also so proud to say that our class has won another “BINGO”’ on our 100’s chart for TEAMWORK! J  As a reward, we will be having a stuffed animal day!  Kiddos are invited to bring a stuffed animal with them to school this Friday, November 17th.  Please be sure that this stuffed animal can fit into their book bag! 

With cold and flu season among us, we are in need of tissues and hand sanitizer to keep those germs away!  If you are willing to donate these items to our classroom, we would really appreciate it! J

Weekly Newsletter for November 6-10, 2017

In Reading, we will continue with our story, “A Fox and a Kit.”  We are discussing the main idea and supporting details of the story.  We have also talked about how wild animals take care of their babies!  Our test for this story will be Tuesday, November 7th.  Our spelling test for inflected endings –s and –ing will also be Tuesday, November 7th

            In Math, we are continuing to work on our addition and subtraction facts to 12!  We also learned that addition and subtraction sentences can be written, “side to side OR up and down.”  We are still practicing our vocabulary words such as: sum, difference, plus sign, minus sign, equals, doubles fact, and near doubles. 

            Last week, our class read the story, Turkey Trouble, by Wendi Silvano.  I sent home a note explaining our Turkey in disguise project and writing!  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!  The kiddos seem very excited about this project!  J  All turkeys and clues are due by Friday, November 10th.  However, you can always send them in throughout the week! 

*A friendly reminder: As of November 3rd (Daylight Savings) shorts are no longer allowed to be worn!  As the weather continues to cool off, please be sure to dress accordingly.  We will be going outside for recess as much as possible!  J

            In Reading, we will begin our story, “A Fox and a Kit.”  As a class, we will be discussing the main idea and supporting details of our story.  We will also be answering the question, “How do wild animals take care of their babies?”

            Our spelling words for this week are: sit, sits, win, wins, fit, fits, hit, hits, nap, and naps.  Our challenge words for this week are: “her” and “too.”  The phonics skills for our story are inflected endings –s and –ing. 

            In Math, we are beginning addition and subtraction facts to 12. 

            As October comes to a close, I will be collecting our AR papers for October tomorrow (10/31).  I will be handing out November AR papers as well.  Please continue to read with your child nightly and document the reading on the AR paper!  Students who complete 15 spaces (or more) will receive a Pizza Hut book-it coupon for a free personal pan pizza!  Also, if your child is reading a chapter book, you can break that chapter book into multiple spaces within the AR paper.  For example: Goosebumps pgs. 1-30, Goosebumps pgs. 30-60, etc.  Another great resource for AR reading are the decodable readers your child brings home throughout the week in their OWL folder.  These readers reinforce the phonics skills we are focusing on and are a great book to practice their fluency!

            This week in Reading, we are continuing to discuss how animals can help people!  We are identifying the characters and setting within our story, “Big Blue Ox.”  Our test for this story will be Wednesday, October 25th!  We will complete this test together while discussing good test-taking strategies! 

Our spelling words for this week are: hot, hop, pot, pop, ox, lock, mop, got, rock, and mom.  Our challenge words are “help” and “use.”  The phonics focus skills for this story are the short o, and the plural –s.  Please continue to practice these spelling words nightly with your child!  Our spelling test on these words will also be Wednesday, October 25th

In Math, we are discussing how to identify and create numbers within a ten-frame.  We are also looking at the relationship between 5 and 10 within the ten-frame.  For example, “7” within the ten-frame is 5 with 2 more, or it can be 10 minus 3.  Our test on Topic 3 will be on Thursday, October 26th

Please continue to encourage your child to practice their reading at home!   Document your child’s reading on their AR paper that can be found in their OWL folder!  Students that complete the October AR paper (15 spaces or more) will receive a Pizza Hut book-it coupon!

Week of October 16-20, 2017

Weekly Newsletter for October 16- 20, 2017

We are diving into our new story this week called, “The Big Blue Ox.”  We will be discussing the characters and setting of our story!  We will also discuss how animals can help people. 

Our spelling words for this week are: hot, hop, pot, pop, ox, lock, mop, got, rock, and mom.  Our challenge words are “help” and “use.”  The phonics focus skills for this story are the short o, and the plural –s. 

We will be taking our Topic 2 Subtraction test on Wednesday, October 18th.  Next, we will dive into Topic 3: Five and Ten Relationships.  As a class, we will be practicing identifying numbers within a 10-frame, as well as, being able to build our own 10- frame to show a number!    This is a very short topic, so our test will likely be early next week! 

As a class, we love to read and listen to stories!  It is very important that kids hear fluent reading and activate comprehension strategies.  One way we can practice these skills is by having guest readers come into our classroom!  If any parent/ grandparent/ guardian would like to come into our class, please let me know by writing me a note, email or Class Dojo message!

Week of October 9-13, 2017

Weekly Newsletter for October 9-13, 2017

            As a class, we have learned and discussed all of our S.P.AR. T. Y rules!  The students have worked very hard to earn their stickers and seemed to really enjoy their dress down days!  We will continue to follow these rules throughout the school year and are working towards our monthly reward!  I am also very excited to share that our class worked together as a team and reached their goal of getting 5 numbers in a row for a BINGO on our 100’s chart!  We will complete an activity together as a reward for our teamwork! 

In Math, we are continuing to discuss subtraction!  We have been focusing on identifying the whole and the part we know!  This information helps us find our missing part or the “difference.” We are taking this information and creating a subtraction sentence!  Our test on subtraction will be early next week! 

            A new Accelerated Reader (AR) paper was sent home last week!  Please continue to encourage your child to practice their reading at home!   Students that complete the October AR paper will receive a Pizza Hut book-it coupon!

Week of October 2- 6, 2017

Weekly Newsletter for October 2-6, 2017

This week, our students are working on the S.P.AR.T.Y rule of Teamwork!  We will continue to discuss and show ways we can be a good team member of our classroom and school.  This rule really connects with our 100’s chart for teamwork.  Our students have been working so hard to collect those 100’s chart points and are SO close to winning a celebration! 

Our spelling words for the story are: six, lip, in, wig, it, did, mix, sit, pin and fix.  Our challenge words are: “she” and “take.”  Our focus phonics skill for this story is the short I sound.  Our spelling test for this story will be on Thursday, October 5th

In Reading, we are continuing to discuss the literary elements of characters and setting.  We are discussing as a class who helps animals and how we can help them!  Our test for our story, Pig in a Wig will be on Thursday, October 5th.  Again, we will take this test together, and discuss good test-taking strategies.  

A new Accelerated Reader (AR) paper will be sent home for the month of October this week!  Students are building a strong reading foundation by practicing reading books on their level!  Kiddos that complete the October AR paper this month will receive a Pizza Hut book-it coupon! 

In Math, we are continuing to discuss subtraction!  Listen for key vocabulary terms such as: minus sign, equal sign, difference, and subtraction sentence!

This week, our students will be focusing on the AR in the S.P.AR.T.Y rules.  We will be discussing ways we can Act Responsible in the classroom, hallway, cafeteria and at recess. 

Our spelling words for the story are: six, lip, in, wig, it, did, mix, sit, pin and fix.  Our challenge words are: “she” and “take.”  Our focus phonics skill for this story is the short I sound. 

For our story Pig in a Wig, we will be identifying the story elements of characters and setting.  We will also be discussing who helps animals and how we can help animals! 

In Math, we are beginning to introduce subtraction or “take away.”  This week we will be looking at finding the missing parts of numbers, as well as, learning how to write a subtraction sentence!  Listen for key vocabulary terms such as: minus sign, equal sign, difference, and subtraction sentence! 
As our month of September comes to a close, please remember to continue to read for our Accelerated Reader (AR) program!  Also, it is very important to track your reading on your AR log in your OWL folder.  Our September AR logs will be collected on Monday, October 2nd!  A new October AR log will be sent home that day as well!

We are continuing our PBIS program in our school and our focus skill is Participation!  We are discussing and practicing what active participation looks like across settings! 

Our spelling words for this story are: at, can, cat, back, dad, am, bat, mad, ran, sack.  Our challenge words are: way, come.  This story our focus phonics skills are the short a sound, and consonant pattern –ck.  This test will be on Friday, September 22nd!

We are continuing to look at the story elements in the story, Sam Come Back!  We will have a test on this story by the end of the week.  We will take this test together and review good test-taking strategies. 

In Math, we are continuing to discuss “ways to make.”  Your child has been working very hard on writing addition sentences, identifying the addends and finding the sum.  These are some key words we are focusing on this week!  Our class will take the Topic One test on Thursday, September 21st

Week of September 11- September 15, 2017

Weekly Newsletter for September 11- 15, 2017

We are kicking off our PBIS program this week and our focus skill is Safety!  We are discussing and practicing how to be safe throughout our school.  The kiddos are continuing to work very hard collecting those positive behavior points on Class Dojo!  As a class, students are working together as a team to earn numbers on our hundreds chart!  I am very impressed on how many numbers are already crossed off!  Keep up the great work! J

Our focus phonics skills for this story are the short a sound, and consonant pattern –ck. 

We will begin looking at the story elements in the story, Sam, Come Back!  As a class, we will be discussing important things pets need!  We will also continue to build our reading and writing stamina! 

In Math, we are continuing to discuss and demonstrate “ways to make” in our introduction to addition!  You may hear your child saying, “part, part, whole”  with hand motions of joining their hands together to show this concept! 

Our schedule for this upcoming week includes:
Monday (9/11)- Day 10- Gym with Mr. Hinkel
Tuesday (9/12)- Day 1- Music with Mr. Kelly.  Today is also picture day!  Remember to smile! J
Wednesday (9/13)- Non-rotation day.  Today is our first data delay day! 
Thursday (9/14)- Day 2- Computers with Mr. Glessner.  We will also have hearing screenings this day!
Friday (9/15)- Day 3- Art with Mrs. Zink.  Spartan Dress Down Day!
