Week of December 17-21, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for December 17- 21, 2018

            In Reading, we will begin our new story, “A Big Fish for Max.”  Throughout this story, we will discuss what a family does together.  Our key sight words for this story are: said, want, good, catch, no, and put. 

            Our focus phonics skills for this story are consonant digraphs sh and th, as well as the vowel sound a, al in ball.  Our spelling words are fish, then, shut, with, rush, shell, shop, trash, thin, and ship.  Our challenge words are “want” and “good.”
 
            In Math, we will work through word problems and identify the unknown number.  We will use this information to build our number sentence.  Our Unit 3 Test will be on Thursday, December 20th. 

            This Friday (12/21) will be the First Grade PBIS reward day!  Students are permitted to bring in an electronic (with your permission) or a board game to be used during the reward time!  Please be sure that all games are school appropriate! Thank you! J

Week of December 10-14, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for December 10- 14, 2018

          We will wrap up our story, “Animal Park,” on Thursday, December 13th with our test!  Throughout this story, we have been discussing things we can learn about wild animals by watching them.  We have also worked on our skill of identifying Cause and Effect.  Our key sight words are: home, them, into, and many. 

          Our focus phonics skills for this story are short u and final consonant blends.  Our spelling words are: crust, bump, jump, must, just, dust, trust, dusk, hunt, and lump.  Our challenge words are “many” and “into.”  Our test on this story will be Thursday, December 13th. 

          In Math, we will continue to work on identifying double facts and near doubles.  We will also continue to work on strengthening our basic facts to 20!

 With cold and flu season among us, we are in need of tissues and hand sanitizer to keep those germs away!  If you are willing to donate these items to our classroom, we would really appreciate it! J

          In Reading, we are continuing to discuss what we can learn from wild animals by watching them.  Throughout the story, “Animal Park” we are identifying cause and effect. 

          Our focus phonics skills for this story are short u and final consonant blends.  Our spelling words are: crust, bump, jump, must, just, dust, trust, dusk, hunt, and lump.  Our challenge words are “many” and “into.” 

          This week in Math, we will continue to work on doubles and near doubles facts.  We will also begin working on solving word problems! 
          December AR reading logs will be sent home in your child’s BEE folder today!  Please continue to document your reading on your log for a Pizza Hunt coupon! J

            In Reading, we will begin our next story, “Animal Park.”  As a class we will talk about what we can learn about wild animals by watching them!  We will also discuss cause and effect.  Our sight words for this story are: home, many, them and into. 

          Our focus phonics skills for this story are short u and final consonant blends.  Our spelling words are: crust, bump, jump, must, just, dust, trust, dusk, hunt, and lump.  Our challenge words are “many” and “into.” 

          We are beginning Unit 3 in Math!  Throughout this unit, we will dig deeper into the understanding of addition and subtraction.  We will begin with learning about fact families and doubles/ near doubles facts! 

          November Reading Logs will be collected on Friday, November 30th!  Please continue to read with your child and record the book on your log sheet!  If you fill your sheet before the end of the month, I will be happy to give your child another one! J  Thank you for your continued support!

Weekly Newsletter for November 19- 23, 2018

          Due to the early dismissal and no school on Friday, we will have a change in our schedule for our tests.

 Our Reading test will now be when we return after Thanksgiving break!  Our key sight words for this test are: saw, tree, your and small.  We will also identify the main idea and details from our reading comprehension story. 

          Our focus phonics skills for this story are short e and initial consonant blends.  Our spelling words are: men, red, step, ten, net, leg, jet, sled, wet and bed.  Our challenge words are “saw” and “your.”  Our spelling test will be tomorrow, November 20th! 

          With our month of November winding down, please continue to read with your child and document their reading on their AR paper!  Those that complete their November AR paper will receive a Pizza Hunt coupon for a free personal size pizza.  Remember if your child is reading a chapter book, you can break that chapter book into multiple spaces!  Another great resource for the AR reading log are the decodable readers!  These readers reinforce the phonics skills we are focusing on in class!  November AR reading logs will be collected Friday, November 30th.

In Reading, we will continue our story “Get the Egg!”  We have had a great time identifying wild animals that live in our neighborhood. Our sight words for this story are: saw, tree, your and small.  Our Reading test will be on Monday, November 19th.   

Our focus phonics skills for this story are short e and initial consonant blends.  The spelling words for this story are: men, red, step, ten, net, leg, jet, sled, wet, and bed.  Our challenge words are “saw” and “your.”  Our spelling Monday, November 19th.

We will take our Unit 2 Test on Addition and Subtraction tomorrow, November 14th.  In Unit 3, we will dig deeper into addition and subtraction concepts to 20.

Weekly Newsletter for November 5-9, 2018

            In Reading, we will begin our new story, “Get the Egg!”  We will discuss wild animals that we see in our neighborhood.  We will also continue to work on identifying the Main Idea and Key Details of a story!  Our sight words for this story are: saw, tree, your and small.

            Our focus phonics skills for this story are short e and initial consonant blends.  The spelling words for this story are: men, red, step, ten, net, leg, jet, sled, wet, and bed.  Our challenge words are “saw” and “your.” 

            In Math, we are continuing to work on addition and subtraction sentences!  We are continuing to find the missing addend, finding two addition sentences that equal the same sum, and solving math facts!  Our Topic 2 Test will be early next week! 

            *A friendly reminder: As of November 4th (Daylight Savings) shorts are no longer allowed to be worn!  As the weather continues to cool off, please be sure to dress accordingly.  We will be going outside for recess as much as possible! J

            We will continue to discuss how wild animals take care of their babies in Reading!  We are focusing on identifying the Main Idea and key details within a story.  The key sight words for “A Fox and a Kit” are: her, too, four, five, eat, and this.  Our Reading test will be on Thursday, November 1st

Our focus phonics skills are inflected endings –s and –ing.  The spelling words for this story are: sit, sits, win, wins, fit, fits, hit, hits, nap, and naps.  Our challenge words are “her” and “too.”  Our spelling test will be on Thursday, November 1st. 

In Math, this week we will continue to discuss the communitive property!  We will also work on identifying a missing addend, showing the part we know and what we are missing and writing the number sentence.  We are continuing to practice our basic facts! 

This Wednesday, October 31st we will be having our annual Halloween Parade and treat in our classroom.  An important paper was sent home in our Friday Folders outlining the guidelines and parade route.  Please send your child’s costume in a bag labeled with their name on Wednesday, October 31st!

            Wednesday is also the end of the month of October.  I will be collecting AR reading logs on that day!  Please be sure to list all books that the students read for that month.  Students who complete 15 entries (or more!)  will receive a Pizza Hut coupon.  Thank you for your continued support!

            Our next story in Reading will be “A Fox and a Kit.”  We will be discussing how wild animals take care of their babies.  Throughout our story we will work on identifying the main idea and key details.
 
            Our focus phonics skills are inflected endings –s and –ing.  The spelling words for this story are: sit, sits, win, wins, fit, fits, hit, hits, nap, and naps.  Our challenge words are “her” and “too.”

            In Math, we will continue to work on addition sentences to 10.  We will work on finding the missing addend, and review using a number line.  Key words we will focus on this week are: addend, plus, equal sign, and sum. 

            Last Friday, in our Friday Folders I sent home our October Scholastic Book Order forms.  You may order online using our classroom code: MJJ8J or by sending in the book order with a payment (Checks payable to Scholastic INC.).  All Scholastic Orders are due by Friday, October 26th.

            Please continue to encourage your child to practice their reading at home!   Document your child’s reading on their AR paper that can be found in their BEE folder!  Students that complete the October AR paper (15 spaces or more) will receive a Pizza Hut book-it coupon! 

            This week is Red Ribbon Week.  Students who are participating in the theme day are allowed to wear jeans or sweatpants.  However, school dress code attire should be followed if they are not participating in that day!  Please see below the theme day schedule.

In Reading, we will continue with our story, “The Big Blue Ox.”  We are discussing ways that animals help people.  Throughout this story we identified the characters and how the setting changed. Sight words for “The Big Blue OX” are: blue, help, little, from, use, and get.  Our Reading test will be Thursday, October 18th. 

Our focus phonics skills for this story are short o and plural –s; consonant s/z/.  The spelling words for this story are: hot, hop, pot, pop, ox, lock, mop, got, rock, and mom.  The challenge words are “help” and “use.”  Our Spelling test will be on Thursday, October 18th. 

In Math, we started learning addition facts to 10 in Unit 2!  We have been identifying the missing addend in our number sentence, and discussing the communitive property! Key vocabulary words you will hear this week are: join, plus, sum, and equal.

Week of October 8-12, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for October 8- 12, 2018

          In Reading, we will dive into our new story, “The Big Blue Ox.”  We will be discussing ways that animals help people.  We will also be focusing on identifying the character and setting of a story!  Our sight words for this story are: blue, help, little, from, use, and get. 

            Our focus phonics skills for this story are short o and plural –s; consonant s/z/.  The spelling words for this story are: hot, hop, pot, pop, ox, lock, mop, got, rock, and mom.  The challenge words are “help” and “use.”  

            We are also continuing to practice our handwriting!  We are watching for a “writer’s eye” when writing.  We look for a capital letter to begin our sentence, lower case letters throughout our sentence, finger spaces between words, and punctuation at the end of our sentence.  We check our sentence at the end to make sure it is a complete thought! 

            In Math, we are beginning Unit 2!  Throughout this unit we will focus on addition and subtraction.  Listen for our key vocabulary words such as: join, separate, sum, difference and equal.
