Week of January 29- February 2, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for January 29- February 2, 2018

            In Reading, we are beginning the story, “The Big Circle.”  Our question we will be discussing is, “How do animal communities work together to survive?”  Throughout the story, we will also be working on sequencing. 

            Our phonics skills for this story are the long O sound and contractions.  Our spelling words include home, hope, rose, woke, those, bone, hose, joke, rode and stone.  Our challenge words are “there” and “together.” 

            In Math, we are continuing to discuss number patterns to 120.  Our test for  Topic 7 will be early next week!

            January AR papers will be collected on Wednesday, January 31st!  Please continue to work on AR reading at home with your child!  This is an excellent way to build fluency and comprehension! J

            On Friday, February 9th we will be having our Valentine’s Day party!  Students may bring in valentines/ treats for each student in our class if you wish!  There are 22 students total in our class!  I will be sending home a class list with your child in their Friday Folders this week! 

            Boosterthon has come to a close with our Fun Run on Friday!  The students had such a good time learning the 6 virtues needed to be a true hero!  Not only did we have a great time with the Fun Run, but our class earned a glow dance party with Mermaid Molly and Rocket Ronnie on Thursday for having the most new pledges that evening!  Thank you so much for all your support of this fundraiser!

Week of January 22-26, 2018

Weekly Newsletter for January 22-26, 2018

In Reading, we will continue with the story, “Who Works Here?”  We are answering the question, “who works in our community to make it a nice place?”  Our test for this story will be Friday, January 26th

Our phonics skills for this story are the Long I sound and digraphs wh, ch, tch, and ph.  Our spelling words for this story are: like, ride, smile, time, white, bike, dime, hide, ice, and kite.  Our challenge words for this story are “who” and “work.” The spelling test for this story will also be Friday, January 26th.

For Math, we are diving into Topic 7!  Throughout this topic, we will discuss number patterns when counting to 120.  Listen for key vocabulary such as: skip counting, column and row

Boosterthon has officially started at North Schuylkill Elementary!  Each day we are learning the “six virtues of becoming a true hero!”  Our fun-run will now take place on Friday, January 26th.  As an incentive to work hard at this great fundraiser, we are doing daily themes in our classrooms!  First grades incentives are as follows:

Monday- “Sit Wherever You Want”-Your child will have the opportunity to pick their own seat this day! 
Tuesday- “Show and Tell”-Your child can bring something to show the class.  This can NOT be an electronic device, and please be sure it is school appropriate!   
Wednesday- “Extra Recess”
Thursday- “Electronic Day”- Students can bring in an electronic device with your permission.  They will be responsible for their own device.  Please be sure all games are school appropriate! 
Friday- Fun Run Day and Movie with Popcorn in the afternoon!

Friday (1/26)- Non-Rotation Day due to Boosterthon!  Please remember to wear your Boosterthon shirt today! 

*Due to Boosterthon Fun Run being moved to Friday, January 26th, the PBIS dress down day will now be Monday, January 29th.  If your student earns their four stickers for “AR” and “T” they are able to dress down this day!

We will be starting a new story in Reading, “Who Works Here?”  Our class will be discussing who works in our community to make it a nicer place. 

Our phonics skills for this story are the Long I sound and digraphs wh, ch, tch, and ph.  Our spelling words for this story are: like, ride, smile, time, white, bike, dime, hide, ice, and kite.  Our challenge words for this story are “who” and “work.”

In Math, we will take our Topic 6 test tomorrow, Tuesday, January 16th.  In Topic 7, we talk about what number patterns there are when counting to 120.  Our key vocabulary for Topic 7 includes: skip counting, column and row. 

This week we will begin Boosterthon!  Our kick-off pep rally is tomorrow and we are very excited to begin learning the “six virtues of becoming a true hero.”  Our fun-run will take place next Thursday!

Scholastic Book Orders are due Friday, January 19th.  You may order online by using our class code: MJJ8J or you may send in the book order with a check (Scholastic INC.)

As a class, we love to read and listen to stories!  It is very important that kids hear fluent reading and activate comprehension strategies.  One way we can practice these skills is by having guest readers come into our classroom!  If any parent/ grandparent/ guardian would like to come into our class, please let me know by writing me a note, email or Class Dojo message!

In Reading, we will continue reading the story, “The Farmer and the Hat.”  Throughout this story, we will be discussing how our school is a community.  We will also continue to work on cause and effect. Our test for this story will be Monday, January 15th

Our phonics skills for this story are the long a and consonants c/s/ and g /j/.  The spelling words for this story are: face, made, age, safe, make, take, cage, cake, late, and name.  Our challenge words for this story are “could” and “old.”  Our spelling test for these skills will be Monday, January 15th.

In Math, we are continuing to discuss strategies we can use to find subtraction facts.  Key vocabulary for this topic includes: minus, difference, related facts, and fact families.  Our Topic 6 test will be Tuesday, January 16th.

A friendly reminder that our Data Delay for Wednesday, January 10th has been cancelled. 

Scholastic Book Orders will be due Friday, January 19th.  You may order online by using our class code: MJJ8J or you may send in the book order with a check (Scholastic INC.)
