New Information Update!

Families,

I wanted to update you with some important information as we move forward with our learning!

1. New assignments have been posted!  These will have a due date which will be each Friday by 3:00pm.   We are also now asking that you submit their work right on Google Classroom or take a picture of it and submit it through Class Dojo!
2. Each week, we will be presenting one new skill per week until the end of our school year!  There will be assignments on the new material, as well as, some review!
3. Office hours are through Google Meet on Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00pm-3:00pm.  I will be here to answer any questions you have regrading the content on Google Classroom or to just say hi and to check-in with your student!  You can access my Google Meet link through the NS website on the COVID-19 pop up box, click "NSE Teacher Classroom Information" and click First Grade!
4. If you have a question regarding technology, here is a link with FAQs and troubleshooting tips! These tips include pictures of what your screen looks like and where to click!

5. For days that the weather is not the best, or for days that your kiddo may need some extra movement, gonoodle.com is a great resource!

Week of March 6-13, 2020


Weekly Newsletter for March 9-13, 2020

In Reading, we will continue with our story, “Life in the Forest.”  We are learning about how plant and animal communities are important to each other.  We are also revisiting the skill of Authors Purpose.  Our high frequency words for “Life in the Forest” will be: grow, food, around, find, water and under.  Our test on “Life in the Forest” will be Thursday, March 12th. 

            Our focus phonics skills for this story are Long U and inflected ending –ed.  Our spelling words are huge, June, rule, tube, use, cube, cute, flute, rude, and mule.  Our challenge words are “water” and “under.”  Our spelling test will also be Thursday, March 12th.

            In Math, we will continue to work with 3D shapes!  We will also dive into the beginning of fractions.  We will work on breaking our shapes into equal and unequal parts!  Our test on Unit 5 will be early next week. 

Attached you will find our March Scholastic Book order forms!  You may order online using our class code: MJJ8J or you may send in your book order with a check (Scholastic INC.).  All Scholastic Book orders are due Wednesday, March 18th. 

In your child’s Friday Folder, I sent home a paper outlining our PTO’s basket raffle.  The event will be held on April 25th and April 26th.  Each classroom has selected a theme to donate towards the basket raffle.  This year, our theme will be Gift Cards Galore!  

There are two ways you can participate in our class basket:

1.    You may purchase a gift card on your own and send it to school with your child in their BEE folder.
2.    You may send in a monetary donation in an envelope in your child’s BEE folder and I will purchase the gift card for you!

*Please note, any size gift card/ money donation would be greatly appreciated!
*If you are interested in participating in the PTO basket raffle, all gift cards and money must be turned in by Thursday, April 9th.

          March 2nd through March 6th is Newspaper in Education Week!  Read at Home Challenge papers were sent home on Friday in your child’s Friday Folder!  If you are interested in participating, please return the completed paper by Monday, March 9th!   To go along with Newspaper in Education week, I have submitted an “ad” to the Republican & Herald.  This ad will be placed in the classified section of the newspaper sometime this week! J

          Our Reading test on “The Big Circle” will be on Thursday, February 27th.  Our high frequency words are: down, there, inside, together, and now. 

Our focus phonics skills for this story are the long O sound and contractions.  Our spelling words are home, hope, rose, woke, those, bone, hose, joke, rode and stone.  Our challenge words are: “there” and “together.”  The test on these words will be on Thursday, February 27th. 

We will begin Unit 5 today in Math!  Throughout this unit, we will explore 2D and 3D shapes, learn shape vocabulary and begin fractions!

Our February Reading Logs will be collected on Friday, February 29th!  A friendly reminder that our decodable books and highlighted stories make great stories to put on your child’s reading log!  These stories are practiced in class and also reinforce our phonics skills!  If your child reads the story 2 times, please place the title on the log! J

Our focus phonics skills for this story are the long O sound and contractions.  Our spelling words are home, hope, rose, woke, those, bone, hose, joke, rode and stone.  Our challenge words are: “there” and “together.”

In Math, our Unit 4 test will be tomorrow, February 19th.  Next, we will begin learning about 2D and 3D shapes in Unit 5!  Please continue to practice addition facts with your child!  These flash cards can be found in their BEE folder!  J

Week of February 10-14, 2020


Weekly Newsletter for February 10-14, 2020

In Reading, we will begin our new story “The Big Circle.”  We will discuss how animal communities will work together to survive.  We will also discuss the sequence of a story!  Our high frequency words are: down, there, inside, together, and now. 

            Our focus phonics skills for this story are the long O sound and contractions.  Our spelling words are home, hope, rose, woke, those, bone, hose, joke, rode and smile.  Our challenge words are: “there” and “together.”

            In Math, we will review representing a number using base-ten blocks, using a number line to solve an addition or subtraction sentence, and identifying ten more or ten less of the given number.  Our test for Unit 4 will be early next week! 

            Our February Scholastic Book Order form was sent home last week!  You may order online using our class code: MJJ8J or you may send in your book order with a check (Scholastic INC.).  All Scholastic Book orders are due Wednesday, February 12th. 

             On Thursday, February 13th we will be having our Valentine’s Day party!  Students may bring in valentines/ treats for each student if you wish!  There are 19 students total in our class!  A list of names of the students in our class was sent home last week! J

Weekly Newsletter for February 3-7, 2020

            We will continue to discuss community jobs and members that work to keep our community a nice place.  We will also continue to discuss the authors purpose of a story!   Our high frequency words for this story are: people, live, work, who, and out.  Our Reading test will be on Wednesday, February 5th. 

Our focus phonics skills for this story are the long I sound and digraphs wh, ch, tch, and ph.  Our spelling words are like, ride, smile, time, white, bike, dime, hide, ice and kite.  The challenge words are: “who” and “work.”  Our Spelling test on these words will be Wednesday, February 5th. 

In Math, we will begin to work with our 120 chart!  We will discuss ten more and ten less!  We will also continue to work on showing numbers in base ten blocks, number sentences, and tens and ones!

            Our new story in Reading is, “Who Works Here?”  In this story, we will learn about who makes our community a great place!  We will also discuss the Authors Purpose of a story!  Our high frequency words for this story are: people, live, work, who, and out.  

          Our focus phonics skills for this story are the long I sound and digraphs wh, ch, tch, and ph.  Our spelling words are like, ride, smile, time, white, bike, dime, hide, ice and kite.  The challenge words are: “who” and “work.” 

          In Math, we will begin to show different ways to represent a number!  Listen for key vocabulary words such as “word form, base ten, expanded form and digits.  We will also continue to compare numbers! 

          A friendly reminder that January Reading Logs will be collected on Friday, January 31st!  Please be sure to record any books that you are reading with your child at home on this log! J

Week of January 20-24, 2020


Weekly Newsletter for January 20- 24, 2020

            This week we will continue to work on the phonics skill Long A and consonants c /s/ and g /j/.  We will also continue to discuss cause and effect this week as a class through read aloud stories!   

          In Math, we will work on comparing two numbers.  Listen for key words such as “greater than, less than, or equal to.”  We will begin working on solving word problems using base ten blocks! 

          January Reading Logs will be collected next Friday (1/31).  Please continue to read with your child at home! J  By practicing reading, students are building both their fluency and comprehension skills!  The decodable readers are a great practice to build these skills as well as practice our focus phonics skills!  Thank you for your continued support! J

            We will continue with our story, “The Farmer in the Hat” this week!  We have talked about how our school and classroom is a community.  We are also discussing cause and effect!  Our high frequency words are: cold, be, old, paper, of, and horse.  The test for this story will be Friday, January 17th. 

Our focus phonics skills are the long a sound and consonants c/s/ and g /j/.  Our spelling words are face, made, age, safe, make, take, cage, cake, late, and name.  Our challenge words are “could” and “old.”  Our test on these words will be on Friday, January 17th. 

In Math, we will continue to explore place value.  We will be working on building tens and comparing two numbers!  Key vocabulary words this week are: tens, ones, greater than, less than, equal to!

          Welcome back and Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing break!  J 

            We will begin a new story this week titled, “The Farmer in the Hat.”  Throughout this story we will discuss how our school is a community.  We will also revisit the skill of cause and effect.  Our high frequency words are: could, be, old, paper, of, and horse. 

            Our focus phonics skills are the long a sound and consonants c/s/ and g /j/.  Our spelling words are face, made, age, safe, make, take, cage, cake, late, and name.  Our challenge words are “could” and “old.” 

            In Math, we will begin Unit 4!  In this unit, we will focus on Place Value!  To begin, we will work on finding groups of ten to skip count and showing extra ones!  Please continue to work on our Math flash cards!  We are working so hard to beat our team score in Spring Math! J
