Week of October 1-5, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for October 1-5, 2018

            In Reading, we took our test for the story “Pig in a Wig.” Throughout this story we discussed who helps animals.  We focused on identifying the plot of the story.  We took our test on this story today!

            Our focus phonics skill was short I and consonant –x.  Our spelling words were six, lip, in, wig, it, did, mix, sit, pin, and fix.  Our challenge words were “she” and “take.”  We took our test on these spelling words today!

In Math, we are learning how to create, organize and represent mathematical ideas!  This week we will continue to work on identifying numbers using ten frames.  We will also introduce simple addition through “part, part, whole” mats.  The Unit 1 test for Math will be on Wednesday, October 3rd. 

New AR Reading Logs were sent home today!  Please continue to read with your child throughout the month of October!  Students are encouraged to read 15 books (or more) to practice reading fluency and comprehension skills.

Week of September 24- 28, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for September 24- 28, 2018

            In Reading, we will continue with our story, “Pig in a Wig.”  As a class, we will be discussing who helps animals.  We will also be working on identifying the plot of a story with key details.  The key sight words for this story are: up, take, she and what.  Our test on this story will be early next week. 

            Our focus phonics skills for this week are short I and consonant –x.  Our spelling words are: six, lip, in, wig, it, did, mix, sit, pin, and fix.  Our challenge words are, “she” and “take.”  Our spelling test on these words will be early next week. 

            In Math, we are learning how to create, organize and represent mathematical ideas!  We are focusing on identifying numbers using a ten frame or tally marks.  We are also identifying if numbers are even or odd and placing numbers on a number line! 

            Last week, I sent home our first Scholastic Book order!  If you are still interested in ordering, you may order online using our class code: MJJ8J or you may send in your book order with a check (Scholastic INC.).  All Scholastic Book orders will be due on Friday, September 28th. 

            As the month of September comes to a close, I will be collecting your students AR papers for September.  Each student is encouraged to read 15 books each month to practice our literacy and phonics skills!  Students who read 15 books will receive a prize for that month!  If your child should complete the AR paper before the end of the month, I will provide them with another log!  I will collect September AR logs on Monday, October 1st. 

As a class, we love to read and listen to stories!  It is very important that kids hear fluent reading and apply comprehension strategies.  One way we can practice these skills is by having guest readers come into our classroom!  If any parent/ grandparent/ guardian would like to come into our classroom as a guest reader, please let me know by writing me a note, email or Class Dojo message!

Weekly Newsletter for September 17- 21, 2018

            In Reading, we will begin our new story, “Pig in a Wig.”  Throughout this story, we will discuss who helps animals.  We will also be discussing the plot of a story and identifying the key details. 

In Math, we are continuing to discuss ways we can organize and represent information about our new class through graphing.  Next, we will begin to dive into number sense and identifying even and odd numbers while using a number line.

This past week our class celebrated our first bingo on our 100s chart for TEAMWORK!  We were so excited to receive so many complements and work together as a team to reach this goal!  Great job, First Grade! J

Later this week, I will be sending home our first Scholastic Book order form.  You may order online using our class code: MJJ8J or you may send in your book order with a check (Scholastic INC.).  All Scholastic Book orders will be due on Friday, September 28th.

Week of September 10-14, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for September 10-14, 2018

          As a class, we are continuing to build a sense of community in our classroom and working as a team!  We continue to practice our classroom routines and following the S.P.AR.T.Y way!  Students have been working very hard earning their Class Dojo points and we are so close to a bingo on our hundreds chart for teamwork! 

In Reading, we are continuing to discuss what pets need in our first story, “Sam, Come Back!”  We are also working on identifying the characters and setting of our story!  Our key sight words are: my, come, way, on, in.  Our test for this story will be on Friday, September 14th. 

Our spelling words for this story are: at, can, cat, back, dad, am, bat, mad, ran, sack.  Our challenge words are: “way” and “come.”  The phonics focus skills are the short a sound and consonant pattern –ck.  Our test for this set of spelling words will be on Friday, September 14th. 

In Math, we are beginning Unit 1: Number Sense.  Currently, we are discussing ways we can organize and represent information about our new class!

Week of September 3-7, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for September 3-7, 2018

          The 2018-2019 school year is off to a great start!  This past week, we have been focusing on building a sense of community in our classroom and working as a team!  As a class, we have been practicing daily classroom routines and learning/ reviewing our classroom and school rules!  Our class has been working very hard earing Class Dojo points and working together to cross numbers off our 100’s chart!  If you need another Class Dojo parent/guardian code, please write me a note and I would be happy to send one home with your child! 

          In Reading, we are beginning our first story, “Sam, Come Back!”  Throughout this story, we will discuss what pets need.  Our key sight words are: my, come, way, on, in. We are also continuing to build our stamina for both reading and writing!

          Our spelling words for this story are: at, can, cat, back, dad, am, bat, mad, ran, sack.  Our challenge words are: “way” and “come.”  The phonics focus skills are the short a sound and consonant pattern –ck.  Students will now begin to keep a notebook that has their spelling words for a reference in their B.E.E folder.

Monday (9/3)- No School!  Happy Labor Day!

          Throughout the week, we will revisit important phonics and literacy skills that we covered this school year.  We will also continue to discuss two-digit addition in Math! 

          Our last AR reading logs will be collected on Wednesday, May 30th.  Please be sure to sign and return your reading log by this day to receive credit for the month of May!

Week of May 21-25, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for May 21-25, 2018

          We are continuing to dive into our story, “Mama’s Birthday Present!”  Throughout this story, we are discussing how a surprise can be a treasure.  We are focusing on how to draw conclusions from the text.  Our test on this story will be on Thursday, May 24th. 

Our focus phonics skills for this story are the vowel team ai and ay and singular and plural possessives.  Our spelling words for this story are train, way, tail, play, day, may, rain, gray, and mail.  Our challenge words are, “about” and “would.”  Our test for these spelling words will be on Thursday, May 24th. 

In Math, we are continuing to discuss adding double digit numbers.  Last week, we learned how to regroup the ones column to create a new ten!

All library book circulation has ended for this school year.  All library books are due back by Monday, May 21st.  If you have any library books still at home, please return them to school as soon as possible!  Thank you! 

Last week, our last Scholastic book flyers were sent home.  To ensure that books will arrive before the summer break, all orders are due no later than Thursday, May 24th!    You can order online using our class code (MJJ8J) or return your book order form with cash or check (Scholastic INC.) to me by Thursday.  Thank you for your support in Scholastic!
