Week of April 15- 19, 2019


Weekly Newsletter for April 15-19, 2019

            We will continue to work on our story, “A Place to Play” this week!  We will work on identifying the sequence of a story.  Our high frequency words are things, always, day, become, nothing, stays, and everything.  Our test on this story will be on Wednesday, April 17th.

Our focus phonics skills are the vowel sounds of y and syllable pattern CV. The spelling words for this story are: my, by, try, sunny, handy, fly, cry, lucky, silly and puppy.  Our challenge words are “things” and “always.”  Our test on these spelling words will be Wednesday, April 17th. 

This week, we will continue to work on identifying coins and their value.  We will also begin discussing counting money! 

Our April Scholastic Book order forms were sent home last week!  You may order online using our class code: MJJ8J or you may send in your book order with a check (Scholastic INC.).  All Scholastic Book orders are due Wednesday, April 17th.

As a class, we love to read and listen to stories!  It is very important that kids hear fluent reading and apply comprehension strategies.  One way we can practice these skills is by having guest readers come into our classroom!  If any parent/ grandparent/ guardian would like to come into our classroom as a guest reader, please let me know by writing me a note, email or Class Dojo message!

Week of April 8-12, 2019


Weekly Newsletter for April 8-12, 2019

          We will begin our new story this week!  Throughout the story, “A Place to Play” we will revisit the skill of sequencing!  We will also discuss how places change.  Our key high frequency words are things, always, day, become, nothing, stays, and everything. 

          Our focus phonics skills are the vowel sounds of y and syllable pattern CV. The spelling words for this story are: my, by, try, sunny, handy, fly, cry, lucky, silly and puppy.  Our challenge words are “things” and “always.” 

          We will begin our new unit in Math this week!  For Unit 7 we will dive into money and graphing!  This week, we will begin to identify a penny and a nickel!

Week of April 1-5, 2019


Weekly Newsletter for April 1- 5, 2019

We will continue with our story, “Honey Bees,” this week!  We are comparing and contrasting insect communities and communities of people.  Our high frequency words are family, other, also, their, some and new.  Our test for this story will be Thursday, April 4th. 

Our focus phonics skills are the Long E sound and syllables VC/CV.  The spelling words for this story are: feet, he, see, we, green, me, she, tree, week, and be. Our challenge words are “some” and “family.”  Our test on these words will be Thursday, April 4th. 

In Math, we are continuing to work on measurement!  We will be measuring items with different objects and ordering items from smallest to largest.  Our test for Unit 6 will be early next week!

Our PTO is hosting a basket raffle event!  The event will be held on April 27th and April 28th.  Each classroom has selected a theme to donate towards the basket raffle.  This year, our theme will be Gift Cards Galore!  

There are two ways you can participate in our class basket:
1.    You may purchase a gift card on your own and send it to school with your child in their BEE folder.
2.    You may send in a monetary donation in an envelope in your child’s BEE folder and I will purchase the gift card for you!
*Please note, any size gift card/ money donation would be greatly appreciated!
*If you are interested in participating in the PTO basket raffle, all gift cards and money must be turned in by Friday, April 5th.

Week of March 25- 29, 2019


Weekly Newsletter for March 25-29, 2019

            Our focus phonics skills are the Long E sound and syllables VC/CV.  The spelling words for this story are: feet, he, see, we, green, me, she, tree, week, and be. Our challenge words are “some” and “family.” 

            In Math, we will continue to work on time and begin measurement!  This week we are focusing on working with “half past” or “thirty” on an analog and digital clock.  We will also begin to discuss measurement using different items to measure with!

            In our Friday Folders, I sent home permission slips for our upcoming Field Trip to Hershey’s Chocolate World!  Our trip is on Wednesday, April 3rd.  If you have not returned your child’s permission slip, please do so by Thursday, March 28th!

Weekly Newsletter for March 18-22, 2019

            We will continue to read and work with our story, “Life in the Forest.”  We are also revisiting the topic of identifying the Author’s Purpose.  Our key high frequency words will be grow, food, around, find, water, and under.  Our test on this story will be Thursday, March 21st. 

            Our focus phonics skills are the long U sound and ending –ed.  Our spelling words for this story are: huge, June, rule, tube, use, cube, cute, flute, rude, and mule.  Our challenge words are “water” and “under.”  Our spelling test on these words will be Thursday, March 21st.

            We have started a new Unit in Math where we will dive into time and measurement!  This week, we will learn to tell time on an analog clock and digital clock!  Listen for key vocabulary words such as: hour hand, minute hand, o’clock, half past, thirty, digital clock and analog clock! 

            Our PTO is hosting a basket raffle event!  The event will be held on April 27th and April 28th.  Each classroom has selected a theme to donate towards the basket raffle.  This year, our theme will be Gift Cards Galore!

            Our focus phonics skills will be the long U sound and ending –ed.  Our spelling words for this story are: huge, June, rule, tube, use, cube, cute, flute, rude, and mule.  Our challenge words are “water” and “under.”

            In Math, we will continue to discuss shapes and fractions.  Our test on this Unit will be Wednesday, March 13th.   Please continue to practice your math facts! J

Last week (March 4th- March 8th) was Career Week!  I would like to invite you into our classroom to share about your career!  Presentations should be between 20-30 minutes in length.  Examples of topics to discuss include: education/ training, personal skills necessary in your field, typical day in your field, hands-on activities/ visuals. If you interested in joining our class to discuss your career, please contact me by Class Dojo message, note, or email (cschuster@northschuylkill.net).

Weekly Newsletter for March 4-8, 2019

            In Reading, we will continue to read and discuss “The Big Circle.”  We have talked about how animals work together to protect their young!  Our high frequency words are: down, there, inside, together, and now.  The test for this story will be Thursday, March 7th. 

Our focus phonics skills for this story are the long O sound and contractions.  Our spelling words are home, hope, rose, woke, those, bone, hose, joke, rode and smile.  Our challenge words are: “there” and “together.” Our spelling test will also be Thursday, March 7th. 

In Math, we will begin to discuss fractions!  Please listen for key vocabulary such as whole, halves, thirds and fourths!  Our test for Unit 5 will be early next week!

March 4- March 8th is Newspaper in Education week!  Read at Home Challenge papers were sent home today in your child’s BEE folder.  If you are interested in participating, please return the paper by Monday, March 11th.  Your child’s name will be published in the Republican & Herald at a later date. To go along with Newspaper in Education week, I have submitted an “ad” to the Republican & Herald.  This ad will be placed in the classified section of the newspaper sometime this week!  J
