Week of March 19- 23, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for March 19-23, 2018

            In our new story, “Ruby in Her Own Time,” we will be discussing what we learn as we grow and change.  As a class, we will also be re-visiting the skill of compare and contrast. 

            Our focus phonics skills for this story are words with –ng and –nk and compound words.  Our spelling words are: bring, trunk, pink, bank, sang, wing, rink, blank, rang, and sunk.  Our challenge words include: “every” and “sure.”

            In Math, we took our Topic 9 test today!  Next, we will be diving into “length” in Topic 12.  Throughout this topic, we will be discussing how objects can be measured, compared and ordered by length. 

            Our PTO basket raffle is quickly approaching!  The dates of this event are April 14th and April 15th.  This year, our theme is a gift card assortment!  If you are interested in participating in our class basket, all gift cards and money must be turned in by Wednesday, March 28th.  Thank you to all that have participated so far! J

            Last week, I sent home a Scholastic Flyer for the Spring edition!  If you are interested in ordering from Scholastic, all orders are due by Thursday, March 22nd.   You may order online using our class code: MJJ8J or by sending in cash or check (Scholastic Inc.) along with your order slip!  Thank you for your continued support! J 

            With cold and flu season, our supply of tissues and hand sanitizer has dwindled as we tried to keep those germs away.   If you are willing to donate these items to our classroom, we would really appreciate it!   Thank you!

Week of March 12- 16, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for March 12- 16, 2018

            We are continuing to discuss how places change in our story, “A Place to Play.”  We are also identifying sequencing words and talking about the sequence of a story.  Our test for “A Place to Play” will be Friday, March 16th. 

Our focus phonics skills for this story are vowel sounds of y and syllable pattern cv.  Our spelling words are: my, by, try, sunny, handy, fly, cry, lucky, silly and puppy. Our challenge words for this story include: “things” and “always.”  Our test for these focus skills will be on Friday, March 16th. 

In Math, we are really focusing on comparing and ordering numbers to 100.  We have really focused on identifying one more, one less, ten more, and ten less!  We are going to begin comparing numbers to identify which is greater than, less than or equal to.  Our test for Topic 9 will be early next week! 

On Friday, I sent home a paper outlining our PTO’s basket raffle.  The event will be held on April 14th and April 15th.  Each classroom has selected a theme to donate towards the basket raffle.  This year, our theme will be a gift card assortment.

There are two ways you can participate in our class basket:

1.     1. You may purchase a gift card on your own and send it to school with your child in their OWL folder. 
      2. You may send in a monetary donation in an envelope in your child’s OWL folder and I will purchase the gift card for you! 

*Please note, any size gift card/ money donation would be greatly appreciated!  
*If you are interested in participating in the PTO basket raffle, all gift cards and money must be turned in by Wednesday, March 28th.

Week of March 5-9, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for March 5- 9, 2018

            We will begin a new Unit in Reading focusing on changes.  For our first story, “A Place to Play,” we will be discussing how places change.  We will also be re-visiting the skill of sequencing throughout this story.

            March 5- March 9th is Newspaper in Education week!  Read at Home Challenge papers were sent home today in your child’s Friday Folder.  If you are interested in participating, please return the paper by Monday, March 12th.  Your child’s name will be published in the Republican & Herald at a later date. To go along with Newspaper in Education week, I have submitted an “ad” to the Republican & Herald.  This ad will be placed in the classified section of the newspaper sometime this week!  J

            I am happy to report that our class has won another BINGO on our 100s chart for TEAMWORK!  As a reward for working together, we will be creating/ designing a puzzle!  J  Keep up the amazing job, first grade!

Week of February 26- March 2, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for February 26- March 2, 2018

            This week, we will begin our new story, “Honey Bees.”  Throughout this story, we will discuss how insect communities are like a community of people.  We will also begin to discuss comparing and contrasting.  The test for “Honey Bees” will be Monday, March 5th. 

            Our phonics skills for this story are the long E sound and VC/CV words.  Our spelling words include: feet, he, see, we, green, me, she, tree, week, and be.  Our challenge words this week are, “some” and “family.”  Our spelling test for these phonics skills will be Monday, March 5th. 

            In Math, we will be taking our Topic 8 test tomorrow (February 27th).  Next, we will begin Topic 9 Comparing and Ordering numbers to 100.  Key vocabulary we will be using include: more, less, greater than, and less than.   

            Earlier this school year, Mrs. Hull our school counselor, sent home a paper regarding Career Week.  I would like to invite you into our classroom to share about your career!  Presentations should be between 20-30 minutes in length.  Examples of topics to discuss include: education/ training, personal skills necessary in your field, typical day in your field, hands-on activities/ visuals.  Career Week is scheduled for March 5th- March 9th.  However, if another date works better with your schedule, we can always arrange a date and time.  If you are interested in joining our class to discuss your career, please contact me by Class Dojo message, note, or email (cschuster@northschuylkill.net).

Week of February 19-23, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for February 19-23, 2018

            We will continue to discuss our story, “Life in the Forest.”  Throughout this story, we are talking about how plant and animal communities are important to each other.  We are also identifying the authors purpose of their writing.  The test for “Life in the Forest” will be Wednesday, February 21st. 

            Our phonics skills for this story are the long U sound and inflected ending    –ed.  Our spelling words include huge, June, rule, tube, use, cube, cute, flute, rude, and mule.  Our challenge words for this story are, “water” and “under.”  Our spelling test for these phonics skills will be Wednesday, February 21st.

In Math, we are continuing to discuss how numbers 10 and higher can be shown, counted, read and written.  Students have been showing this concept using base-ten blocks and discussing place value!  Listen for key vocabulary in this topic including, ones, tens, digit, and break apart a ten. Our test for Topic 8 will be early need week. 

Last week, I included February Scholastic book order flyers.  Book orders are due this Friday, February 23rd.  You may order online at Scholastic Book Club and use our class code: MJJ8J.  You may also send in the book order with a check (Scholastic INC.) and I would be happy to place your order for you!  Thank you for your continued support of Scholastic and reading!  J

Week of February 5-9, 2018


Weekly Newsletter for February 5- February 9, 2018

            In Reading, we are discussing how animal communities work together to survive through our story, “The Big Circle.”  We are also discussing sequencing and identifying clue words such as first, next, then, finally.  Our test for this story will be on Monday, February 12th. 

            Our phonics skills for this story are the long O sound and contractions.  Our spelling words include home, hope, rose, woke, those, bone, hose, joke, rode and stone.  Our challenge words are “there” and “together.”  Our spelling test will be on Monday, February 12th. 

            In Math, we are continuing to learn about number patterns when counting to 120!  Our Topic 7 test will be on Friday, February 9th. 

            On Friday, February 9th we will be having our Valentine’s Day party!  Students may bring in valentines/ treats for each student if you wish!  There are now 23 students total in our class!  A list of names of the students in our class was sent home in Friday Folders last week! 

            I am so excited to share that each student in our class received a free book from Scholastic due to our recent book order!  Thank you so much for your continued support of Scholastic book orders! J
